ABOUT
“In the first edition of Sint-Denijs-City, we looked for the tension between village and city, countryside and urbanization.
This paradox is further refined in this second edition. Not only the question of how a community relates to its environment, but also how the individual seeks his place in it. Many artists question their own place in this world.
Art as mental space, as an attempt to answer the search for meaning. Do I only exist in relation to it and the other…?”
— Curator Jan Leysen
After a first, more than successful, edition in 2023, the second edition of the Sint-Denijs-City art biennial is a fact.
Under the leadership of curator Jan Leysen, the village transforms into a surprising setting for contemporary art. Walk along the slow roads of this picturesque landscape and discover a special route where art and environment meet.
You will pass twenty locations, both unique indoor locations such as the church, old farms, brown pubs and buildings from bygone times, as well as various outdoor locations along the slow roads including a food forest, a vineyard and the typical rural meadows and fields. In total, 43 artists will bring surprising works to Sint-Denijs: about half of them are in situ works specially made for this edition, the other half are loans, carefully selected and matched with a location in the village in consultation with the artist.
Sint-Denijs-City 2025 focuses extra on participation and wants to emphasize the social aspect of life in the village. There is a special collaboration with vzw Jongerenzorg ZWVL where the Cosmogolem project by Koen Vanmechelen is realized together with children and young people from vulnerable families. Cosmogolem is a well-known art installation where young people set up a work of art with instructions from the artist and deposit a wish in it that is included by the artistic installation. In the social food forest De Tuin van Adem en Eten, artist Tinus Vermeersch enters into a dialogue with the many volunteers to create a work of art in situ from there. The local primary school is developing a family trail to stimulate the youngest children and to introduce them in a playful way to the exhibited contemporary art at Sint-Denijs-City.
Sint-Denijs-City is organised by the non-profit organisation Sint-Denijs Zen - Art and Culture Village.
